Making a Difference

The benefits La Florida has experienced selling to the Fair Trade market have been dramatic. With the higher incomes, the co-op has built:
  • Three schools
  • A health clinic
  • Three potable water systems
The co-op has also used Fair Trade revenues to help fund programs such as:

  • A technical school which offers in-depth training in environmentally- responsible farming techniques
  • A micro-credit program which lends money to women to support household businesses
  • Community health services which provide assistance to rural areas
  • Technical assistance and training in crop diversification

“With the premiums from selling our coffee at the Fair Trade price we put 20 cents from each pound sold into educational programs. If that continues, I believe we'll be able to continue supporting ourselves.”
